What is a chassis?
A chassis, also known as an intermodal chassis, is an important load-bearing structure for transporting freight containers and other types of goods. It is usually made of steel, aluminum, or composite materials and is equipped with wheels for flexible transport. Chassis play a crucial role in the global logistics system, especially in container transport.
The main components of the chassis
A complete chassis consists of several core components that ensure structural strength, stability, and transport safety.
- Frame: Provides the basic structure of the chassis and ensures its overall stability.
- Suspension Components: This includes springs, shock absorbers, control arms, etc., which help absorb shocks, maintain traction, and provide a smooth transport experience.
- Axle: Connects the tires and supports the transport load, ensuring power transmission and load-bearing capacity.
Main chassis types
Depending on transport requirements, there are the following main types of chassis:
- Standard chassis: suitable for transport in standard ISO containers.
- Three-axle chassis: can carry heavier loads and are ideal for overweight containers.
- Slider chassis: adjustable in length and suitable for 20-foot and 40-foot containers.
- Extendable chassis: ideal for containers of different lengths.
- Gooseneck Chassis: The front end is lowered to optimize height.
- Lowboy Chassis: For transporting high loads.
- Tank Chassis: Specially designed for transporting cylindrical tank containers.
- Flatbed Chassis: For oversized or non-standard loads.
Chassis weight limits and load capacity
During transport, the following key weight factors need to be considered:
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): includes the chassis, dead weight, and total cargo weight.
- Payload Capacity: measures the weight of cargo that the chassis can carry.
- Axle Weight Limits: avoid safety hazards and regulatory issues caused by overloading.
The difference between a standard ISO container and a special container chassis
- Standard ISO container chassis: equipped with a twist-lock mechanism and compatible with ISO standard containers.
- Special container chassis: These include refrigerated container chassis, tank container chassis, and others designed for special cargo needs.
Chassis maintenance and safety checks
Regular maintenance and checks are essential to ensure safe transport. Key inspection items include tire condition, braking system, twist-locks, etc., to prevent accidents or damage to the goods during transport.
